Chirurgijn of heelmeester: iemand die uitsluitend bevoegd is de heelkunst, niet de geneeskunst, in haar geheel uit te oefenen. De maatschappelijke positie van een chirurgijn (vaak tevens barbier) was oudtijds lager dan die van een geneesheer. In 1796, onder het Franse bewind, werden de ambachten afgeschaft en in 1798 werden hun bezittingen openbaar verkocht.
