Aanvankelijk gestart buiten de wallen om vreemde, arme pelgrims onderdak te geven. Vanaf de 13de eeuw vestigden de zusters zich binnen de stad en breidden hun werking uit met het verplegen van zieken. De zusters kregen in 1453 van de bisschop van Kamerijk eerste statuten.
